Storyboard Text

  • That enough!
  • Yeah Mom can you talk me what's wrong with dad?
  • I know a little bit but if you want more information go to the library.
  • Can you tell me about the vietnam war?
  • The beginning of the story Stop the Sun is about a boy named Terry’s dad who had been in the Vietnam War which took a toll on Terry's father and caused Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. Terry, not knowing what was wrong with his father, wanted to find out or at least understand, so he went to his mother and asked her what was causing his strange behavior. His mother wouldn’t say and Terry started to push her and she said that’s enough. After talking to his mother Terry had tried talking to other people but he just kept hitting walls. He went to the school library to find out more about the Vietnam War but he didn’t find what he was looking for.
  • Tell me about vietnam
  • So when Terry was in school he asked his history teacher, Mr.Carlson, about the Vietnam War but half of Terry was embarrassed to say what he wanted to know so he wasn't specific. So Terry asked “I Just want to know what it was like. I know someone who was in it.” Mr. Carlson had mentioned a few books that Terry didn't read and they ended up helping a lot with talking about what it was like to be in combat. Terry didn't really find what he was looking for. Terry’s father's eyes stared away more often. But one time at the shopping mall Terry had the most embarrassing moment of his life. It started out as a normal shopping trip. Terry went to the record store to look at albums and...
  • GET DOWN
  • Terry's father went to the hardware store. They planned for them to meet up near the mall’s front door. Terry’s father didn't show up and Terry got worried and went to look for his father. Then Terry saw a movement of people towards the hardware store. Terry squeezed through the crowd. When Terry got to the front of the crowd he saw his father on the ground squirming on his stomach. He was crying, looked terrified, his breath was shortened. The thought burned into Terry minded and he wanted to walk away. But Something made him move forward helped the owner of the store get his father into his office and Terry called his mother. She came within a taxi to take them home. While waiting Terry sat in a chair and wanted to disappear. When the embarrassment set in Terry knew he had to do something about it. Terry had to figure out what was wrong with his father. While Terry's mother was out. Terry decides to ask his father about what is wrong with him. Terry started with “ I was wondering if we could talk about something dad.” His father shrugged it off. He responded with We already did the bit about girls. Some time ago, as I remember. No, not that Terry said. It was something else. Something pretty heavy judging by your face. Terry said Yes and Father as well.
  • Terry Bletured out the words Vietnam. His Father said No! Sharply. Terry said but Dad. No, that is another part of my life. A bad part. It was before I met your mother long before you and it has nothing to do with this family. Terry wanted to pressure him to say it wasn't over and said I could help if he could understand it. Terry knew it was all wrong to bring up. Terry said I'm sorry. His father didn't hear him and his eyes were gone again. His father said that he can’t know the thing that he saw. And He said even if I want to I can tell anybody what it was really like. Terry had hated himself and felt he would until he was an old man. Terry felt so bad he was no longer in the kitchen in the house but he was now in a hot place a wet hot place.
  • His father told Terry that he thinks they will just talk about it and it will go away. That is what you think? Terry started to shake his head. That’s what the shrinks said his father continued “ the psychiatrists tell me that if I don’t talk about it, the whole thing will go away. But they don’t know. They weren’t there. Nobody was there but I and some other dead people and they couldn't talk because they couldn’t stop the morning.” Terry frightened about what his father was talking about the other dead people and couldn’t stop the morning. Terry said I don’t understand dad and he said no you don’t his voice hardened, then softened again and said But see, see how it was. He trailed off and started to look around. We were crossing a rice paddy in the dark. He started to stumble over his word and started again. We were crossing a rice paddy and it was dark, still dark you couldn't see the end of your nose. There was light rain, a mist, and I was thinking that during the next break whisper and tell Petey Keressler how nice the rain felt, but of course, I didn't know there wouldn't be a Petey Kressler
  • He took a deep breath. Terry felt his brain start to swirl and he felt the darkness and the rain because he could see it in his father's eyes. While going through the rice paddy We began taking fire from three sides. Everyone dropped down trying to stay low but we couldn’t get low enough. people start being hit. Then they started being the mortars, and we should have moved, should have run but nobody got up and after time we could get up. The fire just kept coming and coming and the motors came and I heard screams as they hit but there was nothing to do. Did Terry say, Dad? Trying to make him stop talking so he didn’t break down. The Mortars he went on I hate the Mortars. You can just hear them winding up as they fire. They just fired back and forth and everywhere there was no radio, no way to call for artillery. I crawled to the side and found Jackson only he wasn't there just a part of his body the top part I hid under it and waited waited waited. The firing stop and I yelled once but then the firing started again so I shut up. You cannot know the fear. It was dark. I was the only one left out of 54 men but I knew that the Vietcong were out there waiting for me. When the light came I knew I was dead one of them poked Jackson's body and they left I was there but I had died. I died on the inside. Terry never really understood and he probably never will but it was a start.
