  • When Ponyboy is walking home from the movies alone at the start of chapter 1. A gang of Soc's come and jump up. "They had me down in a second. They had my arms and legs pinned down" (5). This shows that there is brutal jumps by gangs.
  • In chapter 3 Ponyboy, Johnny, and Two-Bit are walking Cherry and Marcia home which are two Soc's girls. When some Soc's drive up in a blue Mustang Two-bit gives Pony the end of a bottle to defend himeself. "He snatched up an empy bottle, busted of the end, and gave it to me" (45). THis shows that there can be sudden violence anywhere between gangs.
  • In chapter 4 Johnny and Pony are walking threw the park at night when Soc's jump them. Johnny doesn't want to get beat up agian by them so he kills a Soc named Bob. "I killed him, he said slowly, I killed that boy. Bob the handsome Soc."(56) This scene shows that there is killing and that is violant.
  • At the end of chapter 5 Dally is carring a heater so he won't get beat up by Soc's. "We can't walk alone at all. I started carring a heater..."(83). This scene shows that the gangs are so violant that Dally has to start carring a gun to be safe.
  • At the very start of chapter 9 all of the Greasers are getting ready for a rumble. "The rumble was set for seven,"(131). Rumbles are fights that the gangs have with eachother. These fights are usually violante so this supports the fact of the theme violance.
  • In the middle of chapter 10 Dally has gone crazy over Johnny's death so Dally robs a store and gets the police to chase him. Once the police have caught up to him he pulls a gun on them and they shoot him. "He was jerked half around by the impact of the bullets, then slowly crumpled with a look of grim triumph on his face."(154). This scene shows the brutal death of a important character.
