Storyboard Text

  • Dr. Martin Luther King jr. and other ministers gathered groups of people and explained the marches. People who wanted to march in protest would come up to the front and they would schedule a time for practice. Everybody was told that every protest had to be nonviolent. So if someone attacks you, you could not fight back
  • Thousands of children skipped school, or left home to participate in the march. These marches became known as Freedom Rides, and The Children's Crusade specifically.
  • Police commissioner Bull Connor ordered police to bring dogs to attack the kids, and firefighters to spray them with high pressure hoses. The kids started to enjoy this, and even wore bathing suits to the next marches
  • As the people would protest, police officers would arrest them and take them to jail. Due to the amount of kids being arrested, the jails became really crowded, and the people coming in were transferred onto a fenced in fairground
  • On August 28, all of the Civil Rights leaders coordinated an event where blacks, whites, or any race could come and protest at the capital for discrimination against African Americans in the US. A quarter of a million people showed up to protest, and this is where Dr. Martin Luther King jr. gave his iconic "I have a dream" speech.
  • Some people became outraged by the protests and bombed a church on Sixteenth Street. In the process 4 young girls were killed. this is when most white people realized that what they were doing was wrong
