Farquhar stands on a railway bridge over the water with his hands tied behind his back and a rope around his neck on a loose plank, while a captain and a sergeant surround him.
Farquhar closes his eyes and thinks of his wife and children, he hears a sharp metallic sound, the ticking of a watch, when he opens his eyes he thinks he can escape to safety. The captain orders the sergeant to remove the boards.
A soldier appeared and asked Farquhar, What is happening at the front? The soldier, disguised as a northerner, said the northern forces were preparing to attack. It was suggested that the bridge be burned to distract attention, and Farquhar agreed and left.
Farquhar gets stuck, faints, falls into the pool and wakes up to find that the rope has broken. He tries to escape and swim to safety, but the captain orders a soldier to open fire. When Farquhar hears this, he jumps into the water.
He runs and sees his wife crying outside the house, so he runs towards her, but feels a sharp pain in her throat. Everything disappears and Farkhar is found dead, his body hanging from a bridge over Owl Creek.
