  • With Augustus in control of the empire, he established a long period of peace in Rome that many called the Pax Romana. Most of the issues Rome had faced in the past had to do with war, but Augustus had a plan.
  • First, to get internal conflicts under control, Augustus would strengthen loyalty to soldiers by promising them that after discharge they would be given bonuses and land.
  • My epic poem will be about you my dear Augustus, and it will be called The Aeneid, for Aeneas, the Trojan who fled to make Rome. It will show all citizens of Rome how powerful and virtuous you truly are!
  • Next, Caesar got better control of the empire by creating a highway system through Rome’s conquered land. Paved roads spanned about 50,000 miles. The construction of these roads were an incredible creation by the Romans. • Throughout the reign of Augustus he never interfered with the traditional customs which is known as a process called “Romanization.” In order for Augustus to gain support from the Romans, he improved their living conditions. Cities began to prosper as Augustus had aqueducts and sewers built, reduced corruption, military, tax abuse and allowing people to have easier access to free grain. These new living standards improved Roman society and expanded its influence.
  • Augustus was thriving as the first Roman Emperor, although he needed a way to keep the people under the illusion that he was a god-like and transcendent emperor. Through the use of propaganda, Augustus kept the support of the Roman public, and the first way he did this was using the Roman poet, Virgil, to idealize his rule.
  • Virgil wrote for the next 11 years perfecting his Aeneid to idealize Augustus Caesar’s long but successful reign.
