  • The U.S got involved to stop placement of nuclear missiles on Cuba. American spy planes discovered that Cubans were secretly building bases for these nuclear missiles. This is the closest the world has every come to a nuclear war. The blockade prevented the Soviet Union from sending ships to Cuba. Kennedy threatened to invade the island. Khrushchev removed the missiles and the United States didn't invade.

North Korea with Soviet support and westernstyle for South Korea North Korea invaded South Koreato reunite the country under communist rule. PresidentTruman immediately sent U.S troops to South Korea toresist the North Koreans.

  • The CIA hoped to overturn Castro in Cuba. Soviet Union haddeveloped much more powerful and destructive hydrogen bombs.Eisenhower gave approval to train an army of Cuban exiles. Theexiles planned to invade Cuba and overthrow Castro. Only 4months after Kennedy took office 1,400 Cuban exiles landed at theBay of Pigs. CIA planes bombed Cuban air fields. Kennedy refusedto give air support and so the exiles were defeated.

When theShah was admitted into the United States, the Iraniangovernment let an angry mob seize the staff of the U.S Embassy.President Jimmy Carter tried to free the hostages but failed.When Ronald Reagan became president he immediately freed them.

Bush decided to act. Hussein refusedto withdraw from Kuwait. U.S. forces invaded. Iraqi forces weredefeated. They shortly retreated back to Iraq.
  • Al-Qaeda terrorists took control of commercial jet planes andcrashed them into the World Trade Center and pentagon; theUnited States invaded Afghanistan stan when the Taliban refusedto hand over al-Qaeda leaders. The two towers of the WorldTrade Center in New York City collapsed, leading to the deathsof almost three thousand people. In response to the attacks,President George W. Bush declared a global "war on terror".
