- Holes is about the Yelnats family. Stanley is the fourth generation in the family and is accused of stealing shoes and is sent to Camp Green Lake for punishment.
- Climax
- Stanley is trapped in the family curse and wrongfully charged with stealing, when he was actually innocent. Madame Zeroni cursed the Yelnats family for always and eternity.
- Resolution
- Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake, where he digs holes and treated poorly. The camp is far away in the middle of the dessert with scarce food and water. They are also taken over by Yellow Spotted Lizards while trying to find the treasure.
- Denouement
- Stanley carries Zero up God's Thumb and sings a song, which fulfills the promise and breaks the curse.
- The Yelnats family lawyer came to the camp to come pick him up. Stanley and Zero are allowed to leave the camp and as they are leaving it starts raining.
- Stanley is awarded the treasure found at Camp Green Lake because it belonged to his Great-great-grandfather. He also invites Zero to join his family in opening of the treasure. The family curse is officially broken.
