- In chapter four an officer at the concentration camp beat up Ellie senselessly. "He threw himself on me like a wild beast, beating me in the chest, on my head, throwing me on to the ground and picking me up again, crushing me with ever more violent blows." (
- Man vs Society
- While running to another concentration camp Ellie is at an argument with himself. "Though I tried to put it out of my mind, I couldn't help thinking that there were two of us: my body and I. And I that body." (Wiesel 6)
- Man vs God
- As Ellie continues to run he faded in and of consciousness and has many thoughts. One of which about man control over nature. "We were the masters of nature, the masters of the world. We had transcended everything." (Wiesel 6)

- The best example of Man vs Society is when Mosie the Beetle returns from a germany capture and murder of jews. But the others around him do not believe his story. "People not only refused to believe, they refused to listen. Some said he only wanted their pity." (Wiesel 1)
- While all the Jews pray to god during the Rosh Hashanah Ellie, mentally, questions why he must follow. "What are you my god? How do you compare to the stricken mass gathered to affirm to you their faith, their anger, their defiance." (Wiesel 5)
