  • In March of 1917, began the March Revolution in Russia. It began with women factory workers leading a strike for the entire city of Petrograd. The shortage of bread and food sparked riots, where soldiers were forced to fight back against them. However, the soldiers later fought with the people. Eventually, the people of Petrograd rose against Czar Nicholas II, which forced him to give up his throne. A temporary government was developed by leaders of the Duma for the time being. Local councils were created, called Soviets, and lead many cities. This uprising became known as the March Revolution.
  • The Rise of Lenin and the Bolsheviks/The October Revolution
  • After the Bolsheviks took control over Russia, their was unease within the country. Many people were unhappy because the Russian economy was not doing well and the Bolsheviks were not fulfilling their promise of, "Peace, Land, and Bread." This caused groups with many different perspectives to come together with a common goal of taking down the Bolsheviks. They were known as the White Army, while the Bolsheviks or communists, where known as the Red Army. Many nations also joined the White Army. The Red Army was well organized, which allowed them to easily come together and successfully win the civil war.
  • New Economic Policy
  • Many Russian employees working in factories were unhappy with their conditions. Due to Russians lack of materials and income, workers had to pay the consequences by suffering a decrease in their wages. This made them very upset. George Gapon created the Assembly of Russian Workers. Due to Together, they created a list of demands and signed the petition. On January 22, 1905, employees marched to the Winter Palace to propose these demands. When they arrived at the palace, the police attacked and killed many. This became known as Bloody Sunday.
  • The Death of Lenin and Rise of Stalin
  • Vladimir Lenin was man with radical ideas that lead a popular group in Russia, called the Bolsheviks. They had plans of taking over the government through violence. Their slogan, "Peace, Land, and Bread" helped them gain support from many Russians. In November 1917, the Bolsheviks, factory workers, known as the Red Guards, and some Russian soldiers, attacked the Duma's temporary government in the city of Petrograd. Lenin and the Bolsheviks were successful at the November Revolution. They made Russia the first Communist nation and Russia became the Soviet Union.
  • While the Bolsheviks were in power, Russia was not doing well. They suffered from famine due to the lack of food and many people had little to no money. Lenin original had Russia under he rules of War Communism, which prevented the people from getting any income. Lenin saw that the people were unhappy, so in order to maintain his support and power, he set in the New Economic Policy. The idea was that the NEP was temporary, but it allowed the Russian government to recover. The Bolsheviks owned the major means of production, while the peasants could own their own land which allowed them to make money for themselves.
  • Lenin had lived a long life. His health began to dell inedible after enduring poor conditions during the revolution. In his early life, an assassination attempt was made, which left a bullet stuck in his neck. Lenin suffered several strokes during the end of his lifetime. After each, his health and well-being began to decrease. Lenin stepped down from his role in government in December 1922. Before his death, Lenin feared Joseph Stalin taking over. Stalin would be dangerous because he had the power to do whatever he wished. Lenin died on January 21, 1924. In 1991, the Soviet Union was no longer existent.
