  • Newtons Laws of Motion can help!
  • Huh? Who are you and what does that mean?
  • Aarrgh! Why am I having so much trouble playing basketball
  • I'm Mighty Vector and I'm here to help! Newtons Laws of Motion consist upon three main rules or laws.
  • Just three? Well, what are they exactly and how can they help me get better at basketball?
  • In Newton's first law a basketball at rest will stay at rest, and a basketball in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force like the backboard.
  • And when the ball hits the backboard the force of the backboard slows the ball down. That makes sense!
  • Oh, so like when I hold the ball the ball is at rest, but when I shoot the ball I use force to throw it in the hoop.
  • Oh, so it would be easier to throw a baseball because it has a smaller mass and weighs less kilograms than the basketball, allowing it to be thrown at a greater speed. Maybe I should take up baseball instead!
  • In Newton's second law, the force of the toss of the ball depends on the mass of the ball and the acceleration of the arm shooting the ball.
  • In Newton's third law, for every bounce of the ball there is an equal and opposite reaction of the ball and it bounces back up.
  • So dribbling is the action force of me pushing the ball to the ground, and the reaction force is the ball bouncing back up. The harder I bounce the ball, the harder the floor bounces the ball back. Cool!
  • Now you are getting it! Isn't science and basketball fun?!
  • With your explanation, it really helps me understand basketball AND Newtons Laws of Motion!Let's see if I can make this shot...
  • YESSS!
