Storyboard Text

  • We were in Switzerland when we decided to hike up a mountain. There were two options, one was to take a short drive to France and climb Mt. Blanc (the highest peak in Europe) or a smaller mountain in front of mount blanc. We decided to climb the smaller one as we had a large party and thought it would be safest. We took a cable car up the mountain, checked the trail and started the hike.
  • Which one should we climb?
  • As we hiked up the mountain we arrived at a few distinct locations. The first place we arrived at was a large clearing. It had high grass full of yellow dandelions. On either side of the clearing was an array dense trees interrupted by a large gap down the middle reveling a great view of Mt. Blanc. After spending a bit of time there we decided to continue up. The next place we arrived at was a small ramp where people were jumping from and paragliding. After watching them for a bit we continued up the mountain.
  • Look at the view!
  • Once we got to the top of the mountain we stopped to look at the view. It was a large relatively flat peak with a small restaurant on top. We decided not to eat there as we thought we should have enough time to get down the mountain and eat somewhere else. After taking pictures we decided to start heading down. We noticed that a lot of the people going down the mountain were taking a different route down then we took up. We decided to take the back route down as we thought it would be more interesting than going back the way we came.
  • Lets go back a different way
  • We started to go down the mountain. For about 15 minutes the only thing we passed were cattle. At this point it was starting to get late. We passed a runner who told us about a small cut through that would take us back down to the starting point. We continued to follow the trail unable to find the cut through and arrived at a road junction. At this point it had set in that we were lost. We knew how to get back however we had no clue where we were. We decided to continue down the road we were taking. We eventually arrived at a small building. We crossed a cattle bridge and walked up to the building hoping to find someone that could help us. After finding nobody and realizing that we probably didn't want to find someone there we decided to abort and head back the way we came
  • Its starting to get dark lets just go back
  • When we arrived at the top of the mountain it was starting to get dark. It dawned on us that we didn't know when the last cable car closed. We went into the small restaurant to use the bathroom and ask what time the cable cars closed, however their English wasn't great and they couldn't answer us. We decided to just go down the way we came. We spotted another trail that we think was the correct path but didn't want to risk it. As we hurried down the mountain I started to get ahead of everyone else. I got to the bottom way faster than it took to get up. At that point it was dark. I was ahead of my family but wasn't to scared as I was pumped full of adrenalin. After confirming that the cable cars were indeed closed I walked up to a couple who was still there who spoke a bit of English. I asked them about a way down besides the cable car but they said they couldn't help us. They did however point to a man practicing tightrope and said they could help translate so we could ask him.
  • What time do you think the cable car closes?
  • My dad and rest of my family got down the trail and came over to me. I told them that the couple would help us translate to ask the guy and they took over. It was at that point that I realized it probably wasn't smart for a kid to walk up to random strangers on a mountain in the pitchback night. They eventually agreed on the man taking us down after he finished his workout so we just had to wait. Once he was done we all stuffed ourselves into his van although he had no backseats. On the way down the mountain he pointed out the sheer drop-off that had we tried to walk down the mountain with no lights we would of fallen down. We eventually got back down where he took us to a bus stop that allowed us to go back to the hotel. The takeaway message is to make sure you always prepare yourself so you don't miss important information such as when the cable car closes or what the correct trails are.
  • I'm glad we made it down I don't know what we would of done if we had to walk
