Wait, wait, wait!! This is just the story of the Hobbit with some really bad different names.
There once was a young flogget, named Bilgo Braggins. Bilgo lived in a hole in the ground in a land called the Squire.....
So? It's my story that I'm writing.
But that violates copyright, you could get in trouble.
Not necessarily, you can still take inspiration from other people but you need to make sure it meets fair use requirements, and it has to be different from the original inspiration.
Wait what's copyright? And how did I violate it?
Wait so does this mean I have to start all over again?
Copyright is something that protects people's original works, and that original work can't be used without permission from that person.
So then when is it considered fair?
Well its not quite as simple as that but the four factors too consider are these.
Fair use allows for some uses of copyrighted works without obtaining permission as long as it is considered fair.
Make sure that the purpose of the work is noncommercial, educational, scholarly, newsworthy, or transformative.
Make sure that the nature of the work used is factual or based on public documents.
The work should not have a significant effect on the market.
Try to make sure the amount you use from the original work is a small proportion.
Thank you, now that I know all this I can write an original story without worrying too much about copyright.
