- UUHHH!! Why are we even here at church?! What's the purpose of this dumb religion?!
- I could just say it's to worship god but there's actually a deeper purpose for all religions as a whole.
- Huh?! Why are we in this weird Egyptian palace thing?
- Well, it may not look it to you but this would be similar to what we call a church in our time. Those dogs are like the statues of Christ you see in a church.
- Anyways, on to the point of bringing you here, religion exists to ensure the social stability of systems. Be that Egypt or the Catholic Church
- This social stability is kept by maintaining the idea that the world is run by superhuman laws. We see that with Christianity and Islam, god wills something to be done or made something some way so that's the way things must be done
- Why are we in this throne room?
- Well, in medieval times many kings justified their power just because they were "chosen" by god to rule
- This would be an example of religion using superhuman laws to maintain social stability by making the king chosen "legally" by god
- So religion is just how we maintain the stability of our world?
- Yes, but so far I've only told you about how its used to maintain the stability or control of ruling powers.
- It also serves as the basis for what rules or norms humanity as a whole should follow. Like, god proclaims that thou shall not kill to tell people that murder is bad(it is)
- So what you're telling is that religion exists to maintain social stability by pinning the creators of those rules that govern our society as supernatural entities?
- Yes. Religion is a system of human norms and values that is founded on a belief in a superhuman order. The purpose of these norms being to maintain the social stability of the world
- These norms like I said before could be as simple as thou shall not kill to all rulers shall be chosen by god.
