The Monsters are Due on Maple Street Theme: Turning on the people you trust, leads to more trouble.
In the teleplay, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling , I think the theme is that mankind is its worst enemy. To start off, on page 74, it says “People bring this up, now their murmuring becomes a loud chant filling the air with accusations and demand action”. This supports why this is the theme because the people are already turning on him since they are trying to find a scapegoat quickly to solve this problem. They are so quick to turn on Les. since they are all in panic and disarray. Next, on page 14 of the digital version, Charlie shoots Pete van Horn, mistaking him due to the darkness of the area. This helps my reasoning since Charlie shot him dead with no hesistation. All the panic from confusion and mistrust with eachother lead Charlie to shoot Pete van Horn. Lastly on Page 16 of the digital version, Charlie tells everyone that Tommy is the real enemy. This supports my theme since Charlie is quick to blame Tommy for this mess just so he can get out of the spotlight. Once he said that, people begin to turn on Tommy quickly then they keep on trying to find a scapegoat to blame everything, accusations turn to violence and the situation escalates quickly just from the mistrust in everyone around them.
