Storyboard Text

  • The United States was perfectly balanced between slave states and free states, However, California declared itself as a free state in 1850, which harmed the balance.
  • I, California, am now a free state!
  • NO! You can't ruin the union!
  • After California declared this, people had disputes and many arguments whether or not California should be a slave state or free state.
  • California cannot be a free state. The imbalance is not fair, and the North will have an advantage!
  • THE COMPROMISE OF 1850
  • NO! California should be a free state.
  • I propose The Compromise of 1850!
  • As a result of these arguments, Henry Clay proposed the Compromise of 1850.
  • The compromise admitted California to the United States as a “free” (no slavery) state but allowed some newly acquired territories to decide on slavery for themselves.
  • The Senate rejected Clay's proposal. Many Northerners rejected the bill because it added a slave state and seemingly opened the door for slavery to expand someday south of the 36–30 line.
  • We do not accept this compromise.
  • The compromise was passed onto Stephan Douglas, who was an advocate and helped guide the bill through Congress. He split the one bill into multiple bills, allowing congressmen to vote on each topic.
