This quote illustrates that her skin color is the first thing people notice about her and no matter how dark her skin was she was very noticeable

- Jude always dreamed of following her father's footsteps and competing in college track. In the text, it states "She won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the state championship meet, and miracle of miracles, college recruiters saw her " (Bennett 93) This represents Jude's amazing talent in track, which created the path of her leaving Mallard behind and pursuing her passion for running track.
- What does Jude do well?
- Jude was on the phone with Desiree, and she confesses to her mother that she is seeing someone. She says "He's nice, Mama. He's so sweet to me. But he's not like other boys" (Bennett 141). This shows that Jude sees something special in Reese beyond normal characteristics that are associated with typical boys. It implies that Reese treats Jude with love and respect which makes her feel appreciated and valued. Jude's words reflect her affection for Reese and the special connection she feels with him.
