  • Laura, what's wrong ? You seem to be worried.
  • Mom, I am unable to remember the types of forces.
  • Oh.. I'll help you in to remember them.
  • Thank you, Mom
  • Slide: 2
  • Observe the examples I show you, only then you will know what they are.
  • Yes, Mom
  • So, let me start with FORCE. Force is a Pull or Push that acts on an object and that can make things move, stop, or change direction.
  • Slide: 3
  • See, as I am holding the books, there is a physical contact between the books and my hand, so it is called CONTACT FORCE.
  • Notice this Laura. For holding the books, my muscles are being used too. So, it can be also called MUSCULAR FORCE.
  • Yes, Mom. This is exactly what I asked ma'am that day.
  • Slide: 4
  • See, now the books fell down. So, there is no physical contact between the books and my hand, It is called NON - CONTACT FORCE.
  • Yes Mom. I am able to relate these with my Textbook.
  • Laura, I am able to stand because the gravity is pulling me towards the ground, So, it can be also called GRAVITATIONAL FORCE. The objects need not always be in physical contact.
  • Even magnetic force is a type of non-contact force that attracts or repels objects without physically touching them, like when magnets pull or push each other from a distance.
  • Slide: 5
  • It's ok, Darling. It happened because of FRICTIONAL FORCE. It is the force that opposes motion when two or more objects are in contact move in respect to each other.
  • Mom, I tripped over the books. Ooouuch !! It hurts..
  • Even Air resistance is an example of contact force. Air resistance acts against the motion of objects moving through the air, such as a parachute slowing down a falling skydiver.
  • Yes Mom, I do
  • Laura, do you feel your hair being pulled by the TV Screen ?
  • It is because of ELECTROSTATIC FORCE. Before you came into the room, I was watching TV. So, the TV is the Charged Body and your hair is Uncharged. Hence, it was attracting your hair.
  • Slide: 6
  • I will explain them orally as I don't have the materials to show you as examples.
  • You're welcome, Laura
  • It is better now. Mom, there are 2 more forces left.
  • Tension force happens when something like a rope pulls on an object, making it stretch. It's a contact force because it comes from direct touching between things.
  • Reaction force is a contact force that happens when an object pushes back against another object that's pushing on it, like when you sit on a chair, the chair pushes back up on you.
  • Thank you mom for helping me relate to contact and non-contact forces.
