  • FIRE FIGHTERS MAX AND JERRY USE MATH TO SAVE THE DAY!
  • Okay, Let's Go! 
  • There is a fire in a building within the city that is located on the third story.
  • According to a new law, for safety reasons the fire truck must be placed at least 50ft from the building. The ladder on the truck goes to a 60 degree angle. Max, how long should we make the ladder so it reaches?
  • Jerry, we can figure that out, by using the right triangle relationship of sine!
  • By using the relationship of sine, The window is 87ft from the ground and the truck is 15 ft tall. The third story widow is 72ft to the base of the truck (87-15) Sin(60)= 72/ Ladder lengthLadder Length= 72/ Sin (60)=83.1 ft (our ladder must be 83.1 ft to reach the window)
  • Great Job, Max! On to our next mission. I think there is a cat stuck in a tree at Conway Park!
  • Uh Oh Jerry, Its seems as though there are 2 cars blocking the pathway. What are we going to do. 
  • I know! We can use Herons Formula to find the area of the triangle and see if the truck can fit in the space. We know the cars are 25ft apart and both of them are 30 ft from the tree 
  • we can take the square root of the product of s= (25+30+30+)/2 =42.5 and the diffrence between s and each of the sides. We will take the square root of 42.5(42.5-25) (42.5-30) (42.5-30) = 116,210.93. We then take the square root of that which =340square ft
  • Due to the size of our truck we know that it will fit in the 340 square ft space!
  • The cat can now be saved!
