Metaphysics and epistemologyThe escaped prisoner discovered metaphysics through his journey after leaving the cave, and seeing the true appearances of what he assumed was reality. Prior to leaving the cave, the only truth he knew was what he assumed to be the truth. Only after being exposed to reality, did he gain knowledge and understanding of epistemology, and realizing he had to leave the comfort of his own beliefs to gain knowledge of the actuality of his assumptions. The journey begins with pain and ends with reality. The space inside the cave represents the physical realm, or world of senses, while the space outside the cave represents the realm of forms. The prisoner's eyes were not accustomed to the intense light of the sun, hence it took time for his eyes to adjust. The more time he spent outside the cave, the clearer objects were. The escaped prisoner represents the philosopher, who seeks knowledge outside of the cave and outside of the senses. The philosopher who does not at first understand reality and will eventually be killed for his beliefs, similar to what happened to Socrates.
