- "The sky is kira-kira because the color is deep and see-through at the same time."-Lynn
- "School sure is boring, isn't it?"-Katie
- "Oh, Katie, Kate, for spacious skies, for Katie Katie Kate."-Uncle
- LynnIn this scene Lynn is telling Katie about things that are "kira-kira". The sky and people's eyes are kira-kira because their color is both deep and see-through at the same time. This shows how Lynn takes in every little detail she notices, and she shows them all to Katie. She thinks that the world is beautiful, and there is something beautiful and kind in everyone and everything.

- KatieIn this scene Katie is standing alone in the schoolyard. It is her first day of first grade and all of the other girls are ignoring her. She calls out to get their attention, but they don't respond in any way. Even though she knows that she could be ignored, she is still trying to put herself out there and make friends. This shows just how innocent Katie is, she doesn't know why all the other girls are ignoring her.
- "Be careful!"-Mother
- Uncle In this scene Uncle Katsuhisa is trying to cheer up Katie and Lynn by singing them silly songs. He is a very loud man, and it seems fitting that his solution would be singing to the girls. He is also extremely optimistic, so when the girl's parents lose their store, he tells them that everything will be fine and offers them jobs in Georgia. He isn't always reliable, but he will do whatever he can to help the people he loves.
- FatherIn this scene Mother is worried that the van won't make it all the way to Georgia. But Father has absolute faith in his brother. Father is pretty much the opposite of Uncle, he is very thoughtful and quiet. And he doesn't talk to anyone outside his family unless he absolutely has to.
- MotherIn this scene Katie is walking down the stairs and her mother is calling for her to be careful. Once when Katie's mother fell down a single stair, she broke her leg. Now she believes that even a single stair can be extremely dangerous. She doesn't like her kids to do anything that could be in any way dangerous. Some people might say that she is overprotective, but I just think it means that she cares.
