  • Good Morning students. Today we are going to learn about something that most people don’t even know the answer to. What makes us human? Now there are multiple ways of looking at this question. We can look at it from an anthropologist perspective ; which means a person who studies and practices the study of anthropology. But, we can also look at it from a psychologist perspective ; this is a person who studies the mind. Why don't we start with the anthropologist perspective.
  • Well I’ll explain why this makes us human, but before that let's talk about this specific anthropologist. This man named Gregor Mendel was a biologist. One day in the garden Mendel was planting peas and decided to combine one purebred yellow seed plant and one purebred green seed plant ; he found out that he was only receiving yellow peas. The yellow pea’s Mendel called were the dominant. Later he planted the two yellow pea plants together and in a shocking twist he received a green seed. When two alleles are different they would be called Heterozygous, and finally the combination of alleles is known as genotype, therefore the result of green or yellow peas will be called phenotype.
  • Mr. Dougl how does he answer the question on what makes us human?
  • Now, we understand one theory from an anthropologist. Let's talk about the other side ; psychology. This psychologist is one of the best. His name is Sigmund Freund He created the “Sextual Perspective Theory”. Sigmund have 5 phase, he also called t the sex drive Freud called “The Libido” ; oral, anal, phallic , latency, genitals. This is during ages 0 - 1. This is where babies are supposed to drink from bottles or begin to insert things in their mouth for a sense of how each item feels. The second stage is the anal stage, this stages come into play at the age of 1 - 3. This is where the child learns how to use the bathroom. The third level would be the genital stages, commonly in play at the age of 3 - 6. Children will begin to learn/ discover the different male/ female genitals. The rest are more in adolescence and will occur in adulthood
  • Exactly, after knowing the different ideas and theories created by Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel & Sigmund Freund. Darwin decided to enroll in the university of Cambridge, where he was invited as a naturalist to explore the great wonders of the different species. This is where he spent 5 years of his life just looking at different places and the different species. He brought back dozens of fossils that were the first clue to evolution according to Darwin himself. For example in South Africa Darwin realized the different species of turtles and tortoises, he realized that the turtles that were in more humid land had shorter necks while the tortoises in less humid places had longer necks.
  • Oh wow, I never knew the question of “what makes us human?” would open the doors to so many theories/ ideas!
  • Exactly, after knowing the different ideas and theories created by Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel & Sigmund Freund. It is clear to the question on what makes us human. From their theory it clears up an understanding on how us humans function and what makes us humans.
