  • 1803 Louisiana Purchase - Napoleon Negotiation
  • The U.S. wanted to buy the Mississippi River but Spain controlled the area and secretly sold it to France. President Polk then sent 2 men to try to buy it from Napoleon, and they ended up buying the whole area!
  • 1836 Texas - The Battle of Gonzales
  • Mexican Soldiers were sent to Texas to take away a cannon from the Texans as they were afraid of the Texans growing power. Texans then shot and Mexicans retreated.
  • 1838 Indian Removal Act - Trail of tears
  • After President Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act so the U.S. could take their land, many tribes were given a notice to move out of their homes. When the Cherokee tribe refused, they were forced to walk to the reservations, and many died along the way.
  • For the U.S., the Louisiana purchase was important because they now had access to the Mississippi and could use it to send goods to the New Orleans port, increasing their trade economy. For the Native Americans, this was also important to the French, because they were now on good terms with the U.S. which could lead to more business being done between the two countries.
  • 1846 Oregon Treaty - President Polk Threatening War
  • If Great Britain won't let us fulfil our Manifest Destiny and expand our land then we will go to war! (Bluffing)
  • This was significant to Texans because it was the start of the Texas Revolution, and united Texans, leading to Texas separating from Mexico and being able to live without the overbearing control of Mexico, meaning they could farm and create their way of living on their own. For the Mexicans this was important because a large part of their land was at stake, and if they lost it, they would not have as many farming of trading opportunities.
  • 1846 Mexican War - Rio Grande Ambush
  • The U.S. claimed that their boarder should be at the Rio Grande River, but Mexico did not. This led to 2,000 men ambushing American guards at the Rio Grande, staring the Mexican War.
  • The trail of tears impacted the people of the Cherokee tribe and many other indigenous tribes as they had to rethink and essentially start their lives over in a new place, after so many of their people had died on the journey to their reservations. The trail of tears also impacted the U.S. , because once all of the Native American tribes were forced onto reservations, they had more room to farm and expand to more areas without having disputes.
  • 1890 Indian Wars of the West - Massacre at Wounded Knee
  • This was very important to the U.S. because once they controlled the Oregon Country, the economy increased significantly as they could fish, harvest timber, mine for gold, and ship products. The Oregon Treaty was also significant to many Native American tribes including the Nez Perce, Salish, and the Kalmath, who inhabited this land already and were forced out of their homes and had to abandon their traditional ways of life.
  • This was significant to Mexicans because they lost many men and ended up back at the U.S. set border, not gaining back any land for themselves and loosing valuable trading resources from the Rio Grande. For the U.S. this was significant because in the end they got what they wanted and were closer to fulfilling their manifest destiny, and this lead to them being recognized as an Independent country by Mexico meaning they had more business opportunities.
  • For Native American tribes, this was significant because it was the end of the Indian Wars, which ended with the tribes that were included forced into a different lifestyle, and they had to deal with the loss of the majority of their population. For the U.S., this was a situation that was widely celebrated because it was the end of conflict with the Tribes, and they were able to discover more land and opportunities to farm and settle.
  • Soldiers surrounded part of the Sioux Tribe and when a shot was fired, Soldiers fired openly on everyone they saw from the tribe.
