  • Today's topic: 
  • Greek architecture and the use of columns were the building blocks for future architects.
  • Around 600 BCE in the Hellenic period of Greece (when architecture became popular)
  • The most famous type of building the Greeks made are temples. The most famous being Parthenon or the Great Temple of Athena, dedicating to the goddess of war and wisdom Athena.
  • The main theme of the art and sculptures in Greece was human accomplishment. Nude sculptures were common, the Greeks saw beauty in these sculptures.
  • Most of their architecture, art, and pottery were inspired by Greek gods.
  • Roman architecture (500 BCE-500 CE)
  • In the remains of Roman architecture you can find different techniques that Greece popularized. Columns were used more for decoration than actual support.
  • 
  • buildings in Rome were usually made out of concrete and brick. Rome was very sophisticated, formal, and prosperous.
  • Rome popularized the use of domes and arches. they found that arches can support more weight than the posts and pillars the Greeks used.
  • Some of the more popular building were theaters and amphitheaters. The Colosseum is one of the most well known buildings from ancient Rome. It opened in 80 CE Romans were all about entertainment so they used it for lots of shows, one of them being gladiator fights.
  •  Remains of Roman and Greek Architecture are still Here to this day. The technique of both time periods is still used in modern buildings. Some examples of such buildings are The White House, the capital, banks, cathedrals, and churches.
