Matilda goes to the market .She goes to get things for the coffeehouse .She runs into Nathaniel Benson, who teases and flirts with her .

Mattie receives a painting of flowers from Nathaniel.She is in excitement . She also loves it.
Ch.21-25
Matilda wakes Grandfather, who is as hungry as she is. Downstairs, Matilda throws together a soup with vegetables foraged from the garden: beans and turnips, seasoned with some of the kitchen herbs. Grandfather bathes and Mattie spends the afternoon watering the garden.
Ch.26- epilogue
Mattie is finally recovering from the fever. She is in the room with all the patients . She is feeling much better.
Mother Smith, a tiny elderly woman who visits Joseph's house often, warns Matilda not to love Nell .Then she'll never be able to give her up.Matilda stays at Eliza's overnight and helps Eliza and her family with cleaning and caring for the children.
Matilda wakes up the next morning in the garden to see the ground covered in frost. She goes inside and wakes up Eliza, and they celebrate the cold weather that they believe will destroy the fever. Matilda and Eliza then bring the children outside to help cool them down.
