I want to climb that tree.
You can't climb the tree. You are a tomboy.

Authentic Representation
The views of the world is told through the actions of the girl climbing a tree. Miss Nettie tells her to get out of that tree. She says you're no little girl (Richards, p.) and that she is a tomboy. Miss Nettie shames her for her choices. As a girl, I enjoyed doing things that both genders are stereotypically supposed to enjoy. I did play dress up and played with Barbie dolls. I also played with Hot Wheel cars and climbed trees. The girl in the story stated little boys have the upper hand in this world (Richards, p.). In our country, women have had the rights to vote even after African-Americans. The girl states in the end of the story that the only way to make a bid for a girl's equality is to climb right up... (Richards, p.) The girl's desires were not silenced by Miss Nettie, but were heard in the end. She showed that determination is important for little girls to succeed. I was able to relate to this text and see a mirror of myself. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us (Bishop, 1990.)

I'm beautiful and kind.
Will you marry me? We will live happily ever after.

Inauthentic Representation
Cinderella is told through the view of a girl that needs to solve her problem that consists of living with her stepmother and doing all of the chores. The message that is being portrayed is that a girl is unable to solve her own problems. She has a fairy godmother help her to go to the ball. The prince marries her in the end and the problem is solved. The story portrays that females need to be beautiful. The stepsisters didn't get to marry the prince because they didn't fit the mold when the prince tried on the slipper. The males in the story had the power. Her father decided to marry her stepmother. The prince was the one that chose to marry Cinderella. The interests were in favor of the prince. When one of the stepsisters said, I'll wear my satin with the golden flowers! (Thompson, p.) this verified that the story is communicating that girls should be concerned with how they look.

Illustrations
The illustrations in Keep Climbing, Girls consisted of using the colors of bold yellows and greens to contradict typical girl colors. The illustration in one page showed the boys off to the side all playing together, while the girl was watching from in the tree. This illustration helped emphasize that society believes that girls and boys should act differently.
The color choices in the illustrations of Cinderella consisted of soft colors to coincide that girls need to be feminine. The photos showed the stepsisters dressing up to make themselves beautiful. Also, Cinderella is illustrated as a young, beautiful, and petite female. This is what society deems as attractive.
