Storyboard Text

  • Around August Captain went to a religious camp thing for a bit and became even worse to Fredrick and his family. But there was this one preacher who came over often named Mr.Cookman who FD thought would end slavery.
  • In March of 1832 FD went to go live with his new master Captain Auld. Although the captain was mean he was also really powerless and Fredrick always gave him attitude and rarely called him "master". Captain Auld would also underfeed them so often they had to look and steal scraps from dumpsters and neighbors.
  • Find anything?
  • Nope
  • Fredrick, after spending his year at Covey's moves to Mr.Freelands. Even though it's against the rules for slaves to get education he opens a little school to teach them, and it runs smoothly for a while. Fredrick also has much of a better time with this master and continues to live with some of his friends and family. Although FD thinks this is probably the best master he had he still wanted his freedom more than anything. He decided to venture out and get it with a few other people, knowing he would likely die.
  • Soon after FD's attitude became too much for Auld, January 1833, he gave him to this poor man who was supposedly good at getting slaves "back in their place". He got sent there for one year, but he didn't really care as Captain was still starving him and here he would get fed more.
  •
  • No more of that scallywag not feeding me.
  • Work harder!
  • Ha, ha! Come, come! Dash on, dash on!
  • Soon after he bought a woman and a man to make them breed, and he ended up with twins. This only made him more cocky and thought it made him wealthier too. Not long either, FD finally broke and became a "brute".
  • Often times Mr.Covey would sneak up on the slaves to see if they were working and scare them. He would also whip Fredrick for his awkwardness and made them work all day with only 5 minute meals. He also used to make his slaves sing with him hymns since he was a bad singer.
  • After a while FD grew tired of the constant abuse and harassment of Covey and after seeking help he stood up for himself. He learned to stand his ground and after losing, Covey decided that FD was too much and never wanted him again, but secretly it was because someone finally stood up to him.
  • You will no longer treat me horribly!
  • I'll teach you to read, no matter the consequences!
  • "It rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom, and revived within me a sense of my own manhood. It recalled the departed self-confidence, and inspired me again with a determination to be free"
  • I learned to take risks knowing the consequences and when to fight and when not to. I learned that unity is better than just one.
  • Giving us a holiday on Christmas keeps slaves thinking their still thought of and so they wont rebel or leave.
  • I learned that its not fair that I have to give things up to white people when I earned it as well.
