Oh yea it was the micrometer screw gauge, the one used for accurately measuring values like length and width. People like machinists use them when they're producing precise machine parts and tools.
Hi Cassy, what was the instrument miss what talking about in class today?
Yes but don't forget the thimble and ratchet!
Right, right, that instrument has the anvil, spindle, frame and sleeve, correct?
And do you remember what the smallest division was as well?
Yeah I think so, it was 0.01 millimeters and the range was 0-25 millimeters.
Yes that's right! She also showed us how to measure using the instrument., using a button and ping pong ball.
Yes, she first turned the ratchet to open the micrometer then put the button between the spindle and anvil and turned the ratchet to close the spindle and I cannot remember exactly how she read it.
Right, so to read it you first have to read off the millimeter mark to the left of the thimble and if there is a 1/2 millimeter mark then remember to ad 0.5 millimeters to the final reading. Then read to the second decimal place where the thimble meets center of the main scale. And lastly, add the readings together.
Wow you really remembered all of that!
Woah Cassy! I don't even know how you remember all of that!
Haha I don't know, I just really like physics I guess.
