So Tsarina Catherine the Great, tell us about yourself.
Gladly! At the age of 16, I married Peter III, the miserable fool who was somehow the grandson of Peter the Great. My marriage was miserable, but throughout it all I hustled, I studied, I gained popularity until the moment was ripe for me to swoop in and take the throne for myself.
Truly impressive! When did you manage to do that?
Inspirational. Who are your greatest influences? Is there anyone in your country's history you look up to?
Way back in 1762. I had all of Russia behind me. I began for myself a 32-year-long reign and put my name on the history books forever.
I
Well...
One of my predecessors, and my husband's grandfather ,Peter I was a truly memorable ruler. While he is certainly no role model of mine, his efforts to bring Russia into the modern age have had a lasting impact that cannot be ignored.
Well I just adore Enlightenment ideals and I keep a close pen-pal companionship with Voltaire,
He pretty much singlehandedly brought Russia into the Western world and his military conquests helped lay the foundation for the territorial power it is today.
He also greatly expanded and centralized the czar's power. While I must admit some of his methods were... unconventional, he definitely helped put Russia in the position it is in today.
Amazing. And this city is beautiful, by the way.
And you mentioned you admired Enlightenment ideals- have you applied any of them in your rule?
Thank you! Peter the Great also built St. Petersburg- he modeled it after European architectural styles.
I see.
I do love the idea of giving people a little more voice in their government- not so much the practice though. I like my power a little more. And sadly, it's just the way of the world. I truly do wish things were different. But freeing the serfs? It's just too radical.
Well, that's all we have for today. Thank you to our lovely historical figures from England, Russia and La France!!
