At the beginning of the story, a bear comes into Lyddies house and Lyddie and her family have to get the bear out of their house. Lyddie says " Don't nobody yell,' she said softly 'Just back up slow and quiet to the ladder and climb up to the loft" (page 1) Because Lyddie is fighting against the bear and the bear is part of nature.

Lyddie arrives at the tavern and the mistress cutler thinks that Lydddie is a poor homeless person and treats her badly. On page 20 it says "Go along, ' The woman was saying. 'This is a respectable tavern no the township poor farm" The mistress cutler was treating Lyddie badly just because Lyddie is poor. This shows Lyddie is against the mistress cutler because she treats her badly.

Lyddie is back at her house and meets Ezekial who is a runaway slave. On page 41 "Some considered me a slave." The society thinks that Ezekial is a slave and should work for other people but Ezekial does not agree with the society and wants to run away to Canada to be free.

Don'tnobody yell.
