Thomas Jefferson was looking for ways to expand the United States territory. It was bought from the French for 15 million. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States and opened up opportunities for westward expansion.

Lewis and Clark explored 123 miles of Kansas in 1804. They said the land was beautiful. The also said the the deer were plentiful and there was an abundance of wild berries.

Pike explored Kansas in 1806. He described Kansas as a desert and said the land was worthless. Pike compared the land to the deserts in Africa.

President Jackson said the the explorers should not not traveled to "The Great American Desert". He wanted to move the "savages" to different land so they could take their old land and use it.
Hearing about what the explores said about Kansas, the US government didn't think Americans could survive. They forced East american indians to move to other areas. Many tribes were struggling in the new living conditions.
