John Winthrop was the governor of the province of Massachusetts Bay. The poem in the picture above is the end of one of Winthrop's sermons. The sermon is from the religion that Winthrop helped to provide a basis for.
Philip Freneau, also called "The Poet of the American Revolution," was almost killed during a six-week (unwilling) stay on a British prision ship. Freneau's writing was influenced during this imprisonment to become more patriotic and anti-british. One of Freneau's most prominently patriotic poems is mentioned in the picture above.
Phillis Wheatley's poetry was based off of her personal life or the events she noticed happening aroung her. Wheatley's most famous poem is the poem title in the picture above. It is about her experience being taken from Africa and brought to America.
