  • "The wind drove me out of Ilium on to Ismarus, the Cicones' stronghold.
  • "You can only reach your home by disciplining you and your men. Heed my words. You must not touch the cattle of Helios, the sun god, who sees all! If you leave those sacred beasts unharmed, your ship and your crew will reach Ithaca safely. But if you allow your men to kill any of Helios' cattle, then your ship and crew will be destroyed, and you will suffer more long years at sea. You'll return at last, but under a strange sail, unrecognized at home, and your palace overrun by enemies - suitors who seek to eat up your flocks and claim your wife. "
  • \After they sailed from Troy, they ransacked the city, killed the men and took the plunder and wives. Odysseus and his men lost six of their men due to the events that transpired during their battle with the cicones. They then faced the mutinous lotus-eaters, however, him and his men were able to escape.
  • "I signaled the crew with frowns to set me free—they flung themselves at the oars and rowed on harder, Perimedes and Eurylochus springing up at once to bind me faster with rope on chafing rope."
  • Odysseus along with his men faced the Cyclops, who is the son of Poseidon. After their escape under the bellies of rams, Odysseus sailed away while bragging about his victory of defeating Polyphemus by blinding him. This lead to Polyphemus' prayer to Poseidon.
  • ""halting beside each one with a bracing, winning word: ‘Friends, we’re hardly strangers at meeting danger—and this danger is no worse than what we facedwhen Cyclops penned us up in his vaulted cavewith crushing force! But even from there my courage,my presence of mind and tactics saved us all,and we will live to remember this someday,I have no doubt. Up now, follow my orders, all of us work as one!"
  • After they were freed from Circe's Island with the help of Hermes, they traveled to the Kingdom of the Dead. It was there that they heard a prophecy from Tiresias. Odysseus also received the news of his mother's death.
  • Thank You
  • So let’s not be too hasty to send him on his way,and don’t scrimp on his gifts. His need is great
  • After receiving a warning from CIrce's Island about the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis, Odysseus and his men have to face the seamonsters. In order to make it past the Sirens Odysseus puts beeswax in his men's ears to prevent them from hearing the SIrens' songs. He orders his men to tie him up on the post of the ship and only release him once they have past the sirens.
  • After the Sirens, Odysseus and his men had to face Scylla and Charybdis. The men were discouraged, so Odysseus gave them a pep-talk. However, in the end six men lost their lives in the hands of Scylla and Charybdis. The men then decided to eat Helios's cattle because they thought it was better than death of starvation. A storm then arose killing everyone but Odysseus.
  • After Odysseus survives Charybdis, he spends seven years on Calypso's island Ogygia. The gods then decided to release him from Ogygia. Odysseus then ends up in Phaeacia where he asks for hospitality and a ship in order to return home to Ithaca. King Alcinous in return wants to hear his story.
