I feel like I'm missing out on so much in life (Lippincott 7).
“When you have CF, you sort of get used to the idea of dying young. No, I’m terrified for my parents” (Lippincott 13).
Stella Grant is a high school senior with cystic fibrosis. She is back at the hospital after getting a fever and a sore throat. Stella wants to stall time so she starts to decorate her hospital room: with a new comforter; her stuffed panda; artwork done by her sister, Abby; and family photographs
My lung function fell to 35 percent so quickly. And now, even more than the fever and the sore throat, being here in the hospital for the next month doing treatment (Lippincott 14).
After a bit, her best friends Camila and Mya come to visit her before leaving on the senior class trip to Cabo, which Stella can no longer go on because of her illness. While being disappointed that she can't go, that doesn't stop her from helping her friends pick out bathing suits to wear on the trip. She tells her friends she feels like she's missing out on life experiences due to her illness.
I don’t want anyof my bad juju near that perfect, healthy baby (Lippincott 15).
He’s so cute, my lung function feels like it dropped another 10 percent. But I need to stay focus on my health (Lippincott 16).
After everyone leaves, Stella took a moment to realize that she needs to survive for her parents. After losing her sister, Abby, she doesn't want her parents to grieve another child.
Stella distracts herself by making another Youtube video. She uses her platform to send updates about her condition and raise awareness about cystic fibrosis.
After Stella finishes her video, the nurse Julie and Barb come in to welcome Stella. Stella sees that Julie is pregnant and doesn't want to talk to her since she might be passing her bad luck on to Julie’s unborn baby
Later that day, Stella goes to see if there are any new babies in the NICU since she enjoys doing that during her free time. On her way to the NICU, she sees an attractive, handsome boy her age. And tells herself she can't waste time on a boy.
