  • Roman Empire
  •  Healer, I don't feel well, I fear I may have angered the gods in some way. Can you help me?
  • Hmm, your humours may be out of balance. Most likely Yellow Bile because your spleen is affected. I can use leeches to get rid of excess blood and make room for more yellow bile in your body.
  • Renaissance
  • Wow, people weren't been successful back then with overcoming diseases, maybe it has something to do with things outside of the body 
  • That's a good idea!
  • 1765 (first medical school)
  • Hmm, is it true that the stuff I'm going to learn at the school is from a mix of all different sources?
  • Yes, the school teaches a collection of medical information from different doctors all over, using their personal training and techniques.
  • A citizen in Roman times goes to a doctor for help. The doctor explains that the man's humours are out of balance resulting in too little of the humour yellow bile. Humours were the theory back then that you had four bodily liquids that needed to be kept in balance to stay healthy. The four liquids wee blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. The yellow bile was known to affect the spleen and liver.

  • Why do you think that cowpox pus will make me immune from smallpox?
  • The cowpox is almost he same as smallpox, just milder, so when you overcome cowpox, your body will also be making itself immune to smallpox at the same time!
  • People stopped believing in humours and understood that sickness was caused by factors outside of the body.  Girolamo Fracastoro introduced this after seeing how unsuccessful people were in the past at over coming sickness.
  • Present Day, Hospital
  • Good question, I learned at the old college in the middle of town, and they got all their resources from others who were doctors before me and who made more discoveries. So really, I've learned from a lot of people.
  • The first medical school was created in 1765 in the 13 colonies (present day America) using the collected knowledge that was compiled from wide variety of doctors who learned from their own mentors who in turn also learned from their own mentors and so on.

  • Edward A. Jenner creates first vaccine for smallpox after observing how milkmaids seemed to be immune after having gotten cowpox. He injects vaccine into James Phipps  who was at the time 9 years old. He then exposed James multiple time and yet James never got smallpox. Edward A. Jenner then created the name vaccine from the latin word "vacca" which means cow.
  • Mike asks his doctor about where he learned to be a doctor and he explains that he learned from a medical college that got it's information from others people's discoveries which they collected so they could pass it on and teach to other students.
  • Hey, so I think I might want to be a doctor when I'm older, what school did you go to learn everything you know?
