Storyboard Text

  • “You shall inherit nothing in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.” Judges 11:2
  • “Come,... be our commander so that we can fight the Ammonites.” Judges 11:6"...if you go with us to fight against the Ammonites, you shall be the leader of all of the inhabitants of Gilead.” Judges 11:8
  • Okay.
  • Whatever!
  • "...Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites." Judges 11:15
  • “What do you have against me that you come to fight with me in my land?” Judges 11:12
  • "Israel took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok and the Jordan when they came up from Egypt. Now restore it peaceably.” Judges 11:13
  • Jephthah was born to a father named Gilead in the land also named Gilead. He was casted away by his brothers from Gilead because his mother was a harlot; Jephthah wasn't born to his father's legitimate wife.
  • "If you deliver the Ammonites into my power,... whoever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return from the Ammonites in peace shall belong to the Lord. I shall offer him up as a burnt offering.” Judges 11:30-31
  • Some time after Jephthah fled to the land of Tob, the Ammonites waged war with Israel. Feeling threatened, the elders of Gilead asked Jephthah to lead their army against them.
  • After accepting the offer, Jephthah sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Ammonites, to ask why they want war.
  • Say Shibboleth.
  • Are you a Ephraimite?
  • No!
  • Before fighting the Ammonites, Jephthah made a promise to God if He delivers the Ammonites to his power. So God delivered them to him, and Israel was victorious!
  • After their victory, Jephthah returned to his house and saw his only daughter celebrating outside his house in Israel's success. Jephthah was horrified, but he kept his promise to God. His daughter accepted her fate, but she went to the mountains for two months and lamented her virginity with her companions before being sacrificed.
  • Later, the tribe of Ephraim complained to Jephthah that they were never asked to help fight the Ammonites, so they threatened to burn his house. Jephthah said that he did ask them, but they never responded. Then, Jephthah formed an army of Gileadites and defeated them. Those that tried to escape through the Jordan River were killed by the Gileadites by "one question." After, Jephthah judged Israel for six years, died, and was buried at Gilead.
