Moses is being placed in a basket in the river, They put him in the basket so then he hopefully gets sent to a safer home and so the Egyptians wont kill him. The reason why they were trying to kill him was because they were killing all new born babies.

In his despair Moses leaves the palace. he sees all of the slaves and how terrible their treatment is. He sees an Egyptian guard whipping one of the slaves and also he goes to help the slave, he pushes the guard who then falls to his death
