  • During the Great War, millions of Russians on the eastern front, poorly equipped and trained, were being slaughtered. The Czar, Nicolas II, was going against the opinions of his people and continued to stay in the war, despite causing continued struggle for the Russian people. This would severely tarnish his reputation and inspire the Russian people to revolt against the crown.
  • Finally, a man named Vladimir Lenin rose up and spurred the people to rise up and fight against the Duma, the provisional government of the King. Thus, the monarchical government would be replaced with a communist government, and would spark fear across the globe of the idea of communism.
  • In the United States, riots would break out over labor conditions, such as the Great Steel Strike and the Boston Police Strike. Bombings would take place in 8 different American cities, and race riots would break out in cities such as Tulsa and Chicago. The riots mainly called for social and labor reform through negotiations with unions however these were interpreted by the United States as communist behavior.
  • Better Working conditions!!
  • BETTER WAGES!
  • Upon this, views about communism would begin to sour, and the United States and other organizations would look to prevent the spread and to avoid another revolution like what happened in Russia. The United States would create quotas and conduct raids in attempts to control the growth of communism, and the 1st amendment would often be overlooked.
  • General Mitchell Palmer, the attorney general for the United States during 1919, would conduct Palmer raids, which targeted communists and socialists who disagreed with the government. Mainly, Eastern Europeans and Italians were targeted, and these raids were often targeted at anarchists and people who weren’t necessarily communist. This was clearly a violation of the 1st amendment, and mainly intended to prevent the spread of information the government didn't like. The Espionage and Sedition acts of 1918, which limited the freedom of speech during war time, would also be brought back out to prevent the spread of communist ideas. There was also a rise in Nativism, which would influence the building of the National Quota Act of 1924, intended to limit immigrants from Eastern Europe.
  • You Are Communist
  • The Ideas in the Red Scare would continue to be at play during the future Cold War, when the Communist east was pitted against the Democratic West. The United States, as the dominant superpower, would attempt to silence those who were communist through layoffs and interrogations, similar to how communists were arrested and prevented from working during the first Red Scare.
