  • Walking Journey Starts
  • Boat sunk
  • Interview with manager
  • He was obeyed, yet he inspired neither love nor fear, nor respect. He inspired uneasiness
  • Marlow left the station with sixty men for a two hundred mile journey on foot into the Congo. As they walked, they noticed long and burnt grass, ravines, and warm forests. They also passed through abandoned villages and carried a soldier who couldn’t keep up with the troop and began fainting due to the heat. They later reached Marlow’s steamer and realized it had sunk.
  • Shed Burns Down
  • After walking through the Congo, he came across his steamer being grounded after the inexperienced manager tore the bottom from sharp stones. The group thought that if they were to repair it, it would take months and they did not have that leisure of time because Kurtz was ill and the men were trying to save him.
  • Meets an agent
  • a whole candle all to himself. Just at that time the manager was the only man supposed to have any right to candles
  • Marlow has a meeting with the manager and reveals that he was very manipulative and discovers that “he was obeyed, yet he inspired neither love nor fear, nor respect. He inspired uneasiness” (Conrad 16). The men obeyed the manager, but they didn’t respect or fear him. The manager is described in this way because Marlow thinks he is manipulative towards the natives and could change someone’s opinion instantly.
  • Asks Agent About Kurtz
  • A shed full of cotton and beads bursts into flames. A black native is blamed for the fire, and he is beat up. The fire represents lightness as it contrasts to the darkness, and there is a black person who is blamed for starting the light (fire).
  • Marlow meets a high class agent and goes back into his room to talk to him. There, he discovers, “a whole candle all to himself. Just at that time the manager was the only man supposed to have any right to candles” (Conrad 18). The agent thinks he is better than everyone else as he is white. Since he is white, he does not have to follow the rules. He thinks he is above the law. Also, Conrad chooses a candle because a candle is a symbol for lightness.
  • Marlow asks the agent about who Kurtz really is. The agent says he is a prodigy and the chief of the best station with a very bright future. Then, the agent tells him that he was recommended by the same people who sent Kurtz meaning that his aunt’s influences are paying off.
