At 8:45 a.m., Tuesday morning, an American Airlines (AA) passenger flight crashed into the 80th floor of the North tower at the World Trade Center, NYC. This instantly killed and trapped hundreds of people in the building. Approximately 18 minutes after the first plane hit, another flight sliced into the South Tower around the 60th floor. The Pentagon
As the events unfolded in New York, AA Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington, D.C. The plane flew close to the capitol building, but crashed into the west side of the Pentagon at 9:45 a.m. Approximately 125 people were killed in the Pentagon, not including the 64 people aboard the plane.
During the commotion of the Pentagon, another terrifying and unforgettable thing happened. At 10:30 a.m., the north building of the twin towers collapsed. Only six people in the World Trade Center towers at the time of their collapse survived. Almost 10,000 others were treated for injuries, many severe.
You might be curious about the last flight. It's certainly a story of courage. United Flight 93 was hijacked in New Jersey about 40 minutes after takeoff. However, the flight delayed, and passengers heard about the NY and Washington events via cell phone. The passengers fought the hijackers. After gaining control, the aircraft plummeted towards the ground at 500 mph, crashing in a rural field in Pennsylvania at 10:10 a.m. The original destination is unknown, but some suspicions include the White House or a nuclear power plant.
All 44 people aboard were killed.
Despite the traumatizing events of 9/11, there were some positive outcomes. Many people connected with each other, and our nation bonded. Several learned to trust the Lord during that day. Others found a way to help their community. The airline business tightened their safety procedures, and homeland security grew. The 9/11 memorial was also built to help teach people about the attacks and to remember the thousands of citizens and military who lost their lives.
