It is the first day of third grade and Mrs. Ann wants students to get into groups so they can meet new friends!
Connor sees a student sitting alone and introduces himself. His new friends name is Andre! Connor asks Andre if he went to this school last year.
Andre also tells Connor that his mom has been trying to get a job, but she has been having a hard tine.
"I just moved here! I used to live with my grandparents, but now I live with my aunt"
Andre and Connor keep talking every day and choose to sit next to each other in class.
Over the next week, Connor and Andre always play together at recess and talk a lot at school.
Connor goes home and tells his mother about Andre and she tells him to invite Andre over for a playdate sometime!
"He sounds so nice!"
One week Later!
Connor asks Andre to have a playdate and Andre tells him it should be at Connors house.
At the schools welcome night, Andre and Connor are excited to introduce their mothers to each other.
The mothers have small talk and Andres mother explains how Andre is new to the school.
"Mom, can Andre and I have a playdate now?"
Connors mother seems unsure and tells Connor they can talk about it later.
Later that evening, Connor's parents have a conversation.
"Connors new friend at school is Black, and he wants to invite him over to the house"
The woman continues to explain to her husband that she does not know a lot of black people and is not sure if she wants Connor spending time with Andre.
"I'm sorry honey but I don't think it's a good idea"
At home, Connor asks his mom why she was now unsure about their playdate.
"But mom, he is so nice, and my best friend!"
"I am not sure you should be hanging out with kids like him"
Frustrated, Connor tells his mom there is nothing wrong with Andre and thinks he should be able to hangout with him. His mom does not change her mind, and Connor becomes very sad.
Connor goes in his room alone and wonders if his mom doesn't like Andre because his skin color is different. Connor begins to have doubts about him and Andres friendship.
Maybe mom is right and I shouldn't hangout with him.
Connor is starting to realize that his mom may have an issue with the color of Andres skin, which really upsets him. Connor really likes Andre as a friend and doesn't understand why his skin color makes a difference.
Why doesn't mom like black people? What did they do to her? I can still talk to Andre.
Although their friendship is not brought outside of school, the two boys continue to be best friends at school!
Mrs. Ann continues to encourage the two boys' relationship in hopes that Connors mother will come around to Andre and Connor hanging out.
