  • GEOGRAPHY
  • The fort was shaped like a triangle, with artillery mounted at each corner for protection from enemies. Public buildings such as a church, storehouse, and guardhouse were built inside the fort. Houses were built along the inside fort walls.
  • CLIMATE
  • In 1607, three ships carrying 105 wealthy men from England sailed up a river. They named the river James River after King James of England. They landed at a peninsula and decided to build a settlement which they named Jamestown. Since the early founders were wealthy people, the settlement lacked skilled laborers and farmers.
  • IMPACTS OF GEOGRAPHY/CLIMATE ON COLONIAL LIFESTYLE
  • Early settlers faced many problems related to geography and climate at Jamestown settlement. • The water was dirty, marshy and salty, and was not good for drinking and other household usage. • The wet and marshy land was not good for growing a variety of crops, except for tobacco and rice. •The humid climate was ideal for for the breeding of mosquitoes that carry malaria disease. • The prolonged drought also led to starvation.
  • Land was marshy and wet bcause it was along the James River and Atlantic coastal plain. The water was dirty and salty. These conditions made the land not good for farming and growing a variety of crops, although tobacco and rice thrived.
  • The climate was humid with mild winters and hot summers. These conditions were favorable for the breeding of mosquitoes and other parasites that caused diseases among colonists. The warm climate also enabled the Southern colonies including Jamestown to have a lot of plantations.
  • Diseases, starvation and unfamiliar climate led to many deaths among the colonists after one year of settling. Out of the 105 settlers who came to the colony in 1607, only 38 were still alive by 1608.
  • INTER-DEPENDENCE ON OTHER COLONIES and PEOPLE
  • • Jamestown settlers depended on New England colonies for manufactured goods like tools, and equipment. • Colonists depended on African Americans to work as indentured servants. • Initially colonists did not get along well with Powhatans (Native Americans), but relationship improved when Captain John Smith became a colony leader. The settlers and Powhatans traded for much needed goods.
  • FUN FACTS
