Storyboard Text

  • While the gentlemen and ladies feast, an unknown gentleman suddenly enters the hall on horseback. The gigantic knight has a beautiful face and figure. Each piece of his elaborate suit is green, with embossed gold ornaments. His huge horse is green, and his green hair and beard are interwoven with gold thread. He has a holly in one hand and a huge green and golden ax in the other, demands that a game be allowed.
  • I agree
  • I propose a game and the caul will have to hit me with my own acha, and I will be able to return the blow exactly in a year and a day
  • The Green Knight dismounts and leans toward the ground, exposing his neck. Gawain lifts the ax, and in a single blow cuts the head of the Green Knight. Blood flows from the wound and the head rolls through the room, passing through the feet of many of the guests. However, the Green Knight does not fall off his horse. He bends down, lifts his head and holds it in front of him, pointing towards the high table.
  • Although the Green Knight refers to his agreement with Gawain as a "game," what the challenge represents is no different from any of the other games played by Arthur's court, the Green Knight says his challenge is a legal contract. He refers to the agreement as a "pact" and mentions the quotas, and causes Gawain to repeat the terms several times. The Green Knight's language foreshadows the fact that his game has serious ethical implications; effectively tested not only Gawain's bravery, but also his honesty and integrity.
