After a close encounter with Ras's men, the Narrator escapes and is met by a familiar voice.
Hey, buddy where you going. ( Ellison 427)
It's either run or get knocked down, I thought you were still back there.( Ellison 427)
As the Narrator and Scofield talk about what had happened back with the apartments, police emerged and charge towards houses, which were near the two, as shelter from the bricks being thrown down from the building tops. Some officers turn to fire at the two men, and Scofield grunts and goes down.
Git the hell down, man. I been waiting to blast em a long time. (Ellison 428)
No, not with that thing, let's get out of here.(Ellison 428)
Scofield ignores the Narrator and continues shooting at the police men. The Narrator has no choice but to flee for his own safety.
After believing to have escaped the gunfire, the Narrator accidentally comes face to face with Ras and his supporters who are all armed with guns. The Narrator finds a spear lying on the ground next to him, so he picks it up and ferociously throws it at Ras...
Hang the lying traitor! What are you waiting for.(Ellison 434)
...killing Ras. While Ras's supporters stand there in shook, the Narrator seizes the opportunity to flee for his own safety.
The Narrator successfully escapes Ras's supporters because he keeps to the darker sides of streets and in the silent areas. But just when the Narrator was beginning to think he was safe from all of the problems in town, two civilians walk up to him, questioning him about his briefcase.
