- The employer asks Mateo why he has chosen to abruptly leave his job at Exploitron Inc., and Mateo explains the negative work environment and exploitative practices at the company. The employer reassures Mateo that Ethico Inc. has a much more accepting environment and ensures sustainable practices. To this, Mateo lets out a sigh of relief.
- I see... Don't worry, Ethico Inc.'s mission statement forbids that kind of behavior. We strive for an accepting environment where all concerns are heard
- Exploitron Inc. had a negative work environment where everyone was afraid to speak up on exploitative practices, such as using workers in Mexico for cheap labor, where there are fewer safety precautions. I was even kept ignorant of this information.
- Ethico Inc. - promoting integrity and sustainability in what we do
- Mateo walks back into his office on Monday in order to pick up his belongings. As he walks into his office, he sees his friend Jacob, and the two exchange the look as Mateo packs his items into his backpack. No words needed to be said: Jacob knew that this was Mateo's last 5 minutes here. Mateo, however, still speaks up.
- The Next Monday
- I don’t think I’ve had a chance to properly thank you for giving me a referral to this company. I can give you a referral to Ethico Inc. too, after I work there for a while, if you want.
- Jacob gives a somewhat wistful smile, and no response. Mateo waves a final goodbye before leaving the office, and then the building. If Jacob is to leave, it must be of his own volition. But as of now, the future is uncertain.
- If he wants to leave, he can. Otherwise, there's nothing I can do...
