Ranofer lives in Thebes, Egypt with his half-brother Gebu, a cruel, stone-faced man with a heavy hand . Ranofer suspects that Ibni is stealing gold for Gebu, but Ranofer is afraid of telling anyone. Ranofer refuses to take Ibni's wine and defies Gebu. He then gets threatened to be apprenticed to Gebu and gets beat. The next day, Ranofer has an idea. He goes to his father's tomb and thanks him, then he tells Hequet what happened.
Ibni gets fired both by Gebu and by Rek, but then Gebu apprentices Ranofer to him. Then Ranofer, Hequet, and the Ancient start meeting every day after work or during lunch break. Ranofer and Hequet meet Zau and Zau says that Ranofer can be his pupil for free, but that he must reshape his life into another form. Gebu is being very suspicious, so Ranofer, Hequet, and the Ancient decide to spy on Gebu and his friends, Setma and Wenamon.
Ranofer goes into Gebu's room looking for food and instead finds something amazing. A golden goblet. He realizes that Gebu must've stolen it, WHen Ranofer leaves the room, he breaks the seal on Gebu's door and is very afraid. Luckily, Gebu is drunk and doesn't notice the broken seal. Ranofer won't tell anyone what happened and tries to avoid his friends. The Golden Goblet is hidden somewhere in the scroll room, but Ranofer can't find it and he is devastated. Ranofer suspects that Gebu and Wenamon are going to steal again and follows them.
Hequet and Ancient realize that Gebu might be a tomb robber and go looking for Ranofer. Then Ranofer almost gets caught by Gebu and Wenamon, but escapes and blocks the exit to the tomb with a boulder. Heqet and the Ancient see Ranofer running from the tomb. They decide to guard the exit while Ranofer gets help. Ranofer tries to tell some, but everyone is gone at the festival, so he breaks into the palace trying to tell someone, but gets caught.
He tries to tell the guards, but they think that he is crazy. Ranofer is brought to Queen Tiye and she tests him and knows that he is telling the truth. Count Zobeck sends guards to find the goblet and Queen Tiye gives Ranofer a donkey, new clothes, and rewards for Hequet and the Ancient as well. She declares that Ranofer is to be apprenticed to Zau and that she will have the first necklace Ranofer makes.
