- From what I understood, the concepts of planetary motion is useful since you can measure how distant the planet is from the star and determine if the temperature is extremely hot or cold to find a habitable planet. What law was used to calculate it's distance again?
- It's Kepler's third law of planetary motion which refers to the equal relationship between ratio of the squares of the periods and the ratio of it's average distance from the sun.
- Wait. If the first law applies to planets that orbit the sun while the third law is the relation between a planet's distance from sun and the period it takes to compete an orbit, what is the second law?
- The second law is also known as law of areas. The line drawn from the sun to the planet sweeps out equal areas in equal periods of time.This means that a planet travels faster when it is near the sun due to the strong gravitational pull and vice versa.
