- Hey Roman Peasants, have you heard about Christianity yet? Everyone is equal in the eyes of g-d.
- Wow that sounds cool! It doesn't matter if your wealthy or poor? Everyone can reach salvation?
- Yea that's what I'm saying!
- Look, it's a government official
- Listen carefully peasants, anyone found practicing Christianity will be sentenced to death. Roman citizens believe in the Roman g-ds.
- Yikes! Why is he so uptight?
- Yea, why is the Roman government so afraid of Christianity?
- They're just afraid of anything non-traditional...like my Mom's reaction to my mohawk
- I'm pretty sure it's because the Roman Emperor is said to get his authority to rule from the Roman g-ds...and he's afraid if you stop believing in the Roman g-ds than you'll stop believing in him....pst, you didn't hear from me.
- hmmm....so the Roman government is afraid of losing power...
- Thoughts from a Time Traveling Mr. Haley....As we know one of the internal factors leading to the Fall of Rome was the Rise of Christianity...but there were many other internal and external factors. I'll remind my students of that when we prepare for our final.
