  • Good Morning!! I am Mr. Hamrick I am the substitute for Mrs. Cahill
  • Cell Theory
  • We are going to be learning the three parts of the Cell Theory
  • 1. All organisms are made up of one or more cells. To be a living being, you are either a cell or made up of cells.
  • 2. The cell is the basic unit of organization in organisms. This means that any part of the cell cannot be called living. Only the whole cell can be called living.
  • Cell Theory
  • 3. All cells come from preexisting cells, which means new cells come from the division of other, existing cells
  • Some of you have asked how the Cell Theory came about.
  • In 1665, Robert Hooke used a microscope on a piece of cork and found empty little boxes and named them cells.
  • In the 1830's, Matthias Schleiden used a microscope to to study plants and decided they were made up of cells. Theodor Schwann did the same with animals and found animials are made of cells as well.
  • Years later, Rudolf Virchow stated that cells divide into new cells. And along with Hooke, Schleiden, and Schwann's conclusions, made up the cell theory.
