1. Where to search

The best site to search would be either Google or a scholarly source like Google Scholar

Google Scholar provides a simple way to search for scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats. Some of these sources include articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, academic publishers, professional societies, universities, and other websites

2. How to search a specific topic. Here are some key steps to follow when you are searching on the internet:

1. choose your search terms carefully

2. add more words to narrow the search

3.use synonyms (ex. terms, words, name)

4.search within a site (we will be using Google)

Some more kid-friendly search engines: Safe search by using Google's safe search feature

  • Google Kid Search
  • Fact Monster
  • Kidtopia
  • Kiddle

3. How to decide in the source is reliable. As you skim the website, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Who is the author?
  2. Where was the source published?
  3. What information does the source include
  4. When was the source published?

It is important to critically evaluate sources because reliable sources make you more informed writer and more trustworthy.

For citing the website in the text:

  1. Cite website directly after the sentence
  2. Reference should be in parentheses and period at the end
  3. If author is known, then citation to their last name if not use title
  4. Close parentheses after the last quotation

4.Citing your Source. These are two basic approaches to citation using in-text citations and endnotes/footnotes

  1. Information should be presented in the first line
  2. Format is authors last name, first name, "website name" publisher and publication date
