  • To tell you simply, the reason why teachers adapt materials is because it enables them to take into account their particular learning environment and to overcome the lack or fit of the course book.
  • Now, the steps in adapting materials includes first is adding which involves supplementation of extra linguistic items and activities to make up for the inadequacy/applicable/insufficiency of materials. Second is deleting which involves removal of some of the linguistic items and activities which are to be extra and necessary.
  • Thank you, Jazz!.
  • Got it James, thank you..
  • And in terms of evaluation, teachers do evaluate materials because of a particular purpose and that is to identify the fitness of something. When they do materials evaluation, that evaluation is based on the required purpose or goal that would be reached by the students.
  • Third is modifying, which means changing some aspects of the materials, such as linguistic level, exercises, and assessment system and soon. The fourth one is simplifying which is employed to make materials less complicated or easier to understand.
  • And lastly, is reordering which is a procedure of materials adaptation through which different parts of a course book are arranged in a different order or sequence. Were you able to follow? That’s for the steps in adapting materials, now, let’s talk about the steps in evaluating materials.
  • Well... in pre-use evaluation, the process involves making predictions about the potential value of materials on people who use them according to Tomlinson. In Whilst (In)-use evaluation, it involves measuring the value of the materials whilst observing or using them.
  • In materials evaluation, Cath, there are three (3) major phases and these are pre-use evaluation, whilst-use evaluation and post-use evaluation.
  • Okay, that was comprehensive
  • What happens in every stage?
  • But you know what this phase is more reliable than pre-use because it makes use of measurement rather than prediction.
  • Then lastly, the last phase, post-use evaluation. This is the most important and valuable phase of evaluation because it can measure the actual effects of the materials on the users and provide reliable information.
  • That's all
  • It’s not a big problem, Cath. You’re always welcome. Let’s just wait for Mrs. Florente. She’ll discuss that one later for sure.
  • You’re right, thank you again!
  • I have learned so much from you today, James. Thank you so much. At least I have ideas now of the assignment given to us. If ever I get called, I know what to say. Thank you so much.
